Do Not Follow Your Parents And Ancestry Into Sin

In Christ Jesus, relationships are not based on family ties. They are based on the truth of God’s word. When it comes to family, there are two important bible passages that must govern your family life. Ephesians 6:1 says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.” You are supposed to follow your parents to the extent to which they are “in the Lord.” You are not permitted to follow your parents (or relatives) into sin simply because you obey them. You have to draw a hard line at sin.

Any family member who fails to represent Jesus Christ and biblical values cannot be idolised and admired. You cannot be inspired by grandparents or parents who are not heroes of your sacred faith. Every cultural practice is the result of people’s interactions with the divine. As a result, one does not justify sin by citing cultural values. You are supposed to follow and obey your natural ancestry to the extent to which they model Jesus Christ. If you don’t have a family history of Christianity and Christian discipleship, be careful of the family rites and traditions you uphold.

In Mark 3:31-35, our Lord Jesus gives a masterclass on how to think about and approach family relationships. His mother and siblings were outside and called for him, hoping to get an audience. He rejected them, claiming that anyone who does God’s will is his true mother, brothers, and sisters. Consider this: if she was truly acting as his mother in that moment, why wasn’t she present at the meeting where he was teaching? Why weren’t his siblings seated to hear him teach God’s word? You must be on your guard. No family ties are allowed to separate you from the divine.
