A great lesson from Jesus is the art of “minding your business.” When his worried parents found him in the temple, young Jesus implied they should have known he would be in his Father’s house, attending to his Father’s business (Luke 2:41-52). Later, as an adult, when pressed to arbitrate a family inheritance dispute, Jesus firmly refused, stating it was not his role and then warning the man against covetousness (Luke 12:13-15). Like Jesus, are you wisely focused on your purpose, or are you drawn into matters that are not your business?
If you’re not happy with your current level of results, you might be expending too much energy on things that are none of your business. These things might even look nice, good and noble. For example, the man came to invite Jesus, a well respected rabbi to intervene in their family inheritance dispute. That would have been a nice thing, but Jesus insisted such activities are beyond the scope of the things he came to do. Jesus already outlined the things he wanted to do: preach the gospel, heal the sick, and ultimately give his life as a ransom for many. Anything outside that was none of his business.
As you grow in your mission, and results begin to show. The ability to say NO becomes a superpower. You must be clear on the 3 to 5 things that form the core of your work and assignments. Anything that is not on that list is none of your business. No matter how good the idea might sound. The modern world moves fast, and there are plenty of distractions. Your attention, time, energy, and resources are limited. When you chase every dispute, every matter, every business that comes your way, you get worn out. You must learn to focus, and mind your own business.
