We are all familiar with God’s first question to Adam after the fall: “Where are you?” But there is another question every believer should learn to ask: “When am I?” The sons of Issachar were commended because they “understood the times and knew what Israel ought to do” (1 Chronicles 12:32). They did not merely possess wisdom. They possessed timing. A good decision made in the wrong season can become a bad decision. Your creativity and spiritual gifts become effective when they are applied according to divine purpose. You need to develop a sense of timing.
The Bible teaches that God sees our lives as a completed story long before we experience them. Before Jeremiah was formed in the womb, God already knew him and appointed him for his calling (Jeremiah 1:5). The psalmist declared that all his days were written in God’s book before one of them came to be (Psalm 139:16). Now, God does not usually reveal the entire journey at once. He teaches us “line upon line, precept upon precept” (Isaiah 28:10). As you walk with Him, today’s obedience prepares you for tomorrow’s revelation. Are you positioned correctly to receive enough light for the next faithful step?
There are times and seasons on the earth. So ask yourself a different question today. Not only, “Where am I?” but also, “When am I?” Is this your season to learn or to lead? To plant or to harvest? To build up or to tear down? Without that sense of timing, how do you know where to channel your creativity and spiritual gifts today? Discernment is not only knowing what God has called you to do. It is knowing what He is asking of you now. Purpose unfolds in seasons, and wisdom is learning to recognise the season before trying to rush into the next one.
