One of the most important investments you can make is to spend time understanding yourself and the mission God has entrusted to you. Many people spend years learning about markets, products, careers, and opportunities, yet give very little attention to understanding the work God has uniquely prepared them to do. Your mission is bigger than your job title or business. It is the thread that ties together your gifts, burdens, experiences, and opportunities. Once you begin to understand that mission, your eyes open. You start to notice problems you were born to solve and opportunities that others walk past without seeing.
Apostle Paul writes, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind… that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2). Notice that the Bible does not simply tell us to wait for God’s will to appear. It calls us to become people who can discern it. Joshua was also instructed to meditate on the book of the law, day and night (Joshua 1:8). That way, he would make his way prosperous, and have good success. Discernment grows where meditation, obedience, and renewed thinking become daily habits.
Nobody can do this work for you. Set aside time to think. Pray over the words God has spoken to you. Reflect on the ideas you have received over time. What have you learnt from the bible, school, mentors, victories, and disappointments? Ask how they fit together. As your understanding deepens, what once seemed like a single opportunity becomes a hundred possibilities. You begin to see that your mission can take many forms while remaining rooted in the same calling. It is your job to renew your mind until you can recognise and embrace your mission. Your best work will glorify God.
