We know from Proverbs 14:34 that when the people of a nation continually act righteously, it causes that nation to be great; continually doing what is sinful causes a nation to be disgraced. If Nigeria has been described as a disgraced country, you don’t need to overthink it. There is a lot of sinful behaviour going on in the country. There must be sin in the country. This is surprising because Nigeria is considered one of the most religious countries in the world, with some sources placing it among the top 10 globally.
Nigeria is a nation of sinners. That is the only explanation for the country’s reproach, shame, and other disgraceful events. According to some sources, 95% of Nigerians pray on a regular basis, ranking the country second only to Afghanistan (96%) in terms of prayerfulness. According to the United States Department of State, approximately 98.1% of Nigeria’s population identifies as Muslim or Christian. Despite having a large number of people who believe in God. Despite having a large number of prayer warriors and intercessors. There is no evidence of righteousness at the national level.
It’s easy to look at the country as a whole and criticise the politicians. And talk about issues like national corruption. Everyone complains about corruption and bad governance. But on a personal level, you can claim a high moral ground by stating that you do not give or accept bribes and are not corrupt. You can even declare yourself a saint. Whatever. The truth is that your country is a disgrace, and things are not going well. You must take some responsibility for the state of your world. This is a call to repentance. Repentance starts with you. How are you contributing to the shame and disgrace of your country?
