You should aspire and work hard to achieve success. There is nothing wrong with that. You just need to make sure you’re not pursuing success in a “worldly” sense. The desire to succeed isn’t an issue. Without an inner drive to succeed and make it in life, your God-given creativity and spiritual gifts will not be fully realised. It is not wrong to make money from your talents and skills. A worker is worth his wages (1 Timothy 5:18). However, while pursuing success, you must ensure that you are solving problems and adding value.
Your motivation for success is important. Worldly success is fueled by greed and lust. These things corrupt the soul. They lead to all forms of perversion. A Christian chasing success on the other hand is driven by a love for God, and operates by faith. If your pursuit in life has the love of God at its centre, you will be fine. As Saint Augustine taught, “Love God and do whatever you please: for the soul trained in love to God will do nothing to offend the One who is Beloved.”
So, maybe you cannot save anybody right now. And you’re not changing the world. You can still make an impact by making sure you’re having good success in your studies, career, business or ministry. You should focus on becoming your most creative and productive self. This is fhe first step. As you succeed, you’ll be able to grow and mature in the things of God. At that point, you can do more for the kingdom. Do business with your talents and gifts, deliver a profit to your master. Then God will set you over cities (Luke 19:11-27).
