Try asking your child or protégé to read a chapter from the Biblical book of Proverbs a day. Then set aside time to debate what they read. You can also ask that they write an essay from what they are reading. Do this, and watch that child or protégé evolve into a wise and strong person. Someone that has a firm grasp on reality. While we all dream of becoming wise and strong, what separates the boys from the men is the understanding that wise people are a product of training. Children don’t just become wise, capable, and professional. They have to be trained.
Proverbs 1:1-7 lays out the core purpose of this important book. It is a book for wisdom and instruction to navigate through our life on earth. A big part of our Christian ideology is about life after death. How to obtain eternal life, and make it to heaven. But it is a good idea to decide that one will not just be heavenly bound, while being useless on the earth. Our Lord Jesus did teach us to live, love and operate as the salt and light of the world.
God is not only interested in you dying and making it into heaven. He wants you to become skillful in honouring your parents, and raising your children. Highly skilled in handing your money, building relationships with others, going to work, and being healthy. You don’t just become the salt and light of your world. To watch over your home, community or industry, there is a wisdom you need to deal with this reality. You can help your children and protégé to develop this practical wisdom by making them read through the book of Proverbs. Many people have been impacted by these exercises. The results might just shock you too.
