What If every Nigerian followed Psalms 34:14?

Under new rules implemented around September 5, 2025, Nigerian men travelling alone will no longer be able to obtain tourist or transit visas to Qatar. Under the revised rules, only women or families are eligible to apply for visas, while men travelling independently are excluded unless accompanied by family. Many news outlets say these new rules are a response to the problem of visa overstays. This gives Nigerians a bad name worldwide. People often connect Nigerians to the “Nigerian prince” scam. Some people think every Nigerian is a scammer. These are serious problems.

Nigerians are quick to blame their government for all the troubles and problems they are facing. They fail to realise that any government is a reflection of the people. A democratic government is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. The most important part of a nation is its people, not the government. If every Nigerian followed Psalms 34:14, they would turn away from evil and do good. They would seek peace and help the nation grow. Then the government would also change for the better.

When some Nigerians breach the trust placed in them as guests in another land (Qatar), they not only harm themselves, but they also tarnish the reputation of the entire nation. Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people (Proverbs 14:34). A government cannot protect the dignity of a people who have already forfeited it through their own actions. The reputation abroad is a mirror reflecting the character at home. Psalms 122:5-9 tells us to seek peace and prosperity in our ‘Jerusalem.’ If you act as a peacemaker in your country, you will be called a child of God.
