Ahead of the 2025/26 season, the Premier League has announced that rainbow-themed symbols will no longer appear in stadiums. This ends an 8-year partnership with the charity (Stonewall), which sponsored the “Rainbow Laces” campaign. Behind the scenes, many players had quietly struggled with wearing the rainbow armband because it went against their religious convictions. The turning point came when Marc Guehi, Crystal Palace’s captain, wrote “I love Jesus” on top of the armband. That bold act sparked conversations that eventually led all 20 club captains to agree to step away from the campaign.
This is a reminder of Daniel’s story in Babylon (Daniel 3). When King Nebuchadnezzar commanded everyone to bow to the golden image, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego respectfully refused. They didn’t shout, they didn’t fight. They just stood. And because they stood, the truth of God was revealed in front of everyone. In the same way, taking a stand for your faith might not be loud, but it will be clear. Sometimes one act of obedience can open the door for others to be courageous. You have to commit to your Christian convictions to distinguish and discriminate as necessary.
As believers, we are called to “come out from among them and be separate” (2 Corinthians 6:17). That means we will sometimes have to make choices that go against the flow. You may not be a Premier League captain, but in your office, school, or community, you will face moments where you must choose between compromise and conviction. Don’t be afraid to stand with Jesus. You made the choice to follow Jesus. You should never turn your back on your Christian principles. Your quiet faithfulness might be the spark that encourages others to do the same.
