How to Handle the Sanballats and Tobiahs Opposed to Your Business

Every business mission worth doing will attract opposition. Think about Nehemiah’s mission to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls. From the moment he began, Sanballat and Tobiah worked to frustrate him. The first thing Nehemiah did was that long before he even announced the project, he devoted himself to fasting and prayer. Do not be in a hurry to start your business or assert yourself at your new job without prayer. Nehemiah’s private prayer life was potent, consistent, and central to his success. Opposition can be exhausting, but prayer keeps you connected and aligned with God. If you neglect prayer, you might find yourself fighting battles without the power to win.

Nehemiah was not only spiritual; he was practical. While rebuilding the wall, the workers had tools in one hand and weapons in the other (Nehemiah 4:17-18). They built and defended at the same time. This is wisdom for us. While we pray, we also take practical measures to protect the work God has given us. Protect your business secrets and ideas. Protect your business against bad deals. Be strategic and always ten steps ahead of your enemies. Fire staff, partners, and clients bringing bad energy to the table. Prayer is powerful, but wisdom builds the defenses that keep the enemy from sabotaging progress.

Finally, Nehemiah refused to be distracted. When Sanballat and Tobiah invited him to a meeting to lure him away, he replied, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down” (Nehemiah 6:1-3). That’s clarity. Some opposition comes as distraction disguised as opportunity. Learn to say no. Guard your focus as much as your faith. Identify what takes your time but adds no value. The enemy knows if he can’t destroy you, he might just delay you. Don’t come down from your wall. Your mission and business is too important.
