Your Mission Does Not Exist In A Vacuum

Every great company today has a mission statement. They put it in writing, they repeat it often, and they shape every decision around it. A mission keeps them focused, helps them decide where to spend their resources, and guides them toward a clear goal. But what many people forget is that missions do not exist in a vacuum. For every mission going in one direction, there is usually another mission going the opposite way. History is full of examples where one mission was defeated, not because it lacked quality, but because the competing mission outlasted and outworked it. An example of this is Betamax vs. VHS.

Now, this is not only true in business; it is a spiritual reality. In John 10:10, Jesus shows us the sharp contrast of two opposing missions: “The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” The mission of the enemy is destruction. The mission of Christ is life. Both missions are active, both are persistent, and both are after the hearts and futures of people. There is no neutral ground. Every soul is either being pulled toward life or toward destruction. For the mission of Christ to succeed, the thief’s mission must fail.

That’s why we cannot be casual about our own mission. You must identify which missions out there are opposed to yours and think about how you’re going to deal with that. It’s not enough to know your mission, you should also have an idea of what you’re fighting against. In business, ignoring the competing mission can cost you market share. In the Kingdom, ignoring it can cost you souls. You need to pray about it, study it and understand how it works. Winning your mission requires more than passion. It requires strategy, awareness, and a readiness to face whatever is pushing in the opposite direction.
