Over the past few days, many Nigerians have followed the heartbreaking story of a young 20-year old woman who allegedly took her own life after an encounter with a 40-year old man who promised to teach her content creation and monetization. Their meeting ended in accusations of abuse, intimidation, and abandonment. As investigations continue and arrests have been made, the full facts remain for the courts to establish. This young woman allegedly needed financial help, empowerment, compassion, and protection. Instead, she encountered darkness. Stories like this remind us that evil is not an abstract concept. It is painfully real.
Jesus understood this reality when He called His followers “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). Light matters because darkness exists. The world contains people who exploit weakness, manipulate trust, and use their strength to prey on those who need help. That is why Christians cannot treat kindness, integrity, and compassion as optional virtues. The priest and the Levite saw the wounded man on the road to Jericho and kept walking, but the Good Samaritan stopped to help (Luke 10:30–37). The difference was not opportunity. All three men encountered suffering. The difference was the condition of their hearts.
If God has given you influence, resources, wisdom, or simply the ability to care, please do not hide your light. Somewhere around you is a young person who needs guidance, a struggling family that needs support, or someone carrying a burden too heavy to bear alone. Do not assume that somebody else will step in. In a world where bad people are destroying lives, let your goodness become more deliberate and intentional. Let your presence leave people safer, stronger, and more hopeful than you met them. The world already has enough people who take advantage of weakness; it desperately needs more people who heal it.
