There are Christians who genuinely love God yet struggle at work, in business, or in their careers because they have hidden their weaknesses beneath layers of spiritual language. Every setback becomes “an attack from the enemy.” Every failure is explained away with promises that “God will make a way.” Meanwhile, deadlines are missed, skills remain undeveloped, and obvious problems go unaddressed. Certainly, miracles are real, and God’s favour cannot be discounted. But not every closed door is spiritual warfare. Sometimes, the uncomfortable truth is that your work is poor, your preparation is shallow, and your craft needs serious improvement.
Martin Luther once observed that the Christian shoemaker serves God not by decorating shoes with little crosses, but by making good shoes because God desires good craftsmanship. The point is simple: excellence itself can be an act of worship. Scripture says that David led Israel “with integrity of heart; with skilful hands” (Psalm 78:72). God cares about both. Integrity without competence limits your impact, while competence without integrity corrupts it. Bezalel was filled with the Spirit to design, build, and create with excellence (Exodus 31:1–5). Grace does not replace skill; it inspires us to pursue it.
This is why Christians must cultivate the humility to confront their incompetence. If customers keep complaining, listen carefully. If your business is struggling, ask difficult questions. Read more. Practise more. Find mentors. Learn your craft. Pray for favour, but also labour for excellence. Some battles require prayer and perseverance; others require training and growth. God is not glorified when we use spiritual language to avoid responsibility. He is glorified when His grace produces men and women who become exceptionally good at the work He has placed in their hands. Grace is not an excuse for mediocrity; it is a call to mastery.
