The people around us shape far more than our schedules; they shape our convictions, habits, ambitions, and, sometimes, our destiny itself. Not every smiling face carries good intentions, and not every opportunity leads to a better future. Some relationships nourish us, while others slowly drain our strength, distort our judgment, and leave deep wounds behind. Scripture therefore asks us to think carefully about who we allow into our lives. Some doors open into opportunities; others open into wounds. Wisdom is not only knowing where to go but also knowing whom to trust along the way.
The Bible repeatedly warns us about the power of human influence. “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals’” (1 Corinthians 15:33). Proverbs urges young people to walk with the wise because “a companion of fools suffers harm” (Proverbs 13:20). This does not mean we should become suspicious of everyone or withdraw from the world. It means we must learn discernment. Charisma is not character. Success is not holiness. Confidence is not wisdom. If we surround ourselves with people who reflect the light of heaven, our lives will gradually become brighter. But if darkness becomes our closest companion, it will eventually shape us too.
This principle applies to friendship, romance, mentorship, business, and every other area of life. Ask yourself difficult questions. Who speaks into your decisions? Who influences your dreams? Who has earned the right to advise you? Are the people closest to you becoming more truthful, more compassionate, and more honourable, or are they pulling you away from the person God is calling you to become? None of us can choose every circumstance we face, but we can choose the voices we permit into our hearts. The people around you are not merely accompanying your journey; they are helping to determine its direction.
