Ruth Had Naomi. Naomi Had Ruth.

People often talk about how mentees need mentors. That is true. Young people need guidance, wisdom, correction, and direction. But many people forget the other side of the story: mentors also need mentees. Responsibility changes people. Caring for another person changes people. Just like becoming a parent stretches a man or woman into maturity, mentoring also stretches people into growth. This is one of the beautiful things we see in the story of Ruth and Naomi. Ruth needed Naomi’s wisdom, leadership, and experience. But Naomi also needed Ruth’s loyalty, strength, presence, and care. They were helping each other heal and rebuild.

Naomi guided Ruth step by step. She advised her on how to approach Boaz wisely. Ruth listened, trusted Naomi, and followed through faithfully. But Naomi also received life again through Ruth. Before Ruth, Naomi was bitter, grieving, and empty after losing her husband and sons. Ruth’s loyalty gave Naomi companionship during painful years. Ruth worked hard to provide food for both of them. Later, when Ruth gave birth, the women even said a son had been born to Naomi. That relationship restored joy, dignity, family, and hope to her life. Both women became better because they walked together.

This is how healthy mentorship works. The mentee gains wisdom, but the mentor also gains purpose. The mentee receives direction, but the mentor receives the joy of pouring into another life. Strong relationships change both sides. That is why you should never approach mentorship selfishly. Do not only ask, “What can I get from this person?” Also ask, “How can my loyalty, service, honor, hard work, and growth bless this person too?” Great mentor-mentee relationships are not one-sided transactions. They are living relationships built on trust, commitment, and shared journey. Ruth had Naomi. Naomi also had Ruth. Both lives were changed forever because of that connection.
