Embracing Your Business As A Calling

The Bible says that man does not live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD does man live (Deuteronomy 8:3). Habakkuk 2:4 says that the just shall live by his faith. We see that a true Christian does not do anything because of money or survival. A Christian must learn to live by faith. With such a firm, and unwavering belief in God, one is empowered to pursue their vocations. So, if you’re running a business. The business must have a purpose beyond money-making. You need to get the understanding of your business as a vehicle for your calling.

A common approach for most business-minded Christians is to support others with proceeds from their business. Lydia (Acts 16:14-15): Described as a “dealer in purple cloth” from Thyatira, a successful merchant who had a household and who hosted Paul’s missionary team. She is a clear example of a believer operating in the sphere of commerce and using her success (selling luxury goods) to support ministry. This is one level. There is a higher level of your business itself being an expression of the call of God upon your life.

Your business should not only be involved in giving and acts of charity. Your business should also be known for good works. People should see your good works in that line of business, and glorify your father in heaven (Matthew 5:16). Dorcas was described in Acts 9:36–43 as being full of good works and charitable acts. Her works were notable for their quality in addition to their charitable nature. There is a lot more good you can do when you see your business as more than an avenue to make money or build a career. Your business can create massive value, and enrich the lives of people.
