Do Not Abandon Your Calling For A Career

It is the spirit of poverty that gives you a career instead of a calling. The calling of God is not limited to vocational ministry like pastors or evangelists. God universally calls all believers to serve Him in their specific spheres. This includes business leaders who build businesses with Christian values. Technologists and engineers who use their skills and creativity for God’s glory. And politicians/civil servants called to seek justice and influence the culture. In essence, every believer has a vocation (a God-given calling) to live out their faith and reflect Christ’s lordship in their daily work and life. But many people abandon their vocation for a career.

The difference between a career and a calling is that a career only pays the bills while a calling enriches the lives of people. Building a career demands compromises. But following your calling will demand sacrifices. A career will make stuff available to you, if you stay away from your core values. On the other hand, your calling works when you allow God to mold you by taking you through certain experiences (Hebrews 5:8). Throughout history, all great men have been called. You need to find and embrace your higher calling, nothing else comes close.

Think about the costs of choosing to build your career over following your calling. Your world is poor, broken and confused because of the saints who chose their career first. As for their calling, it becomes a matter of “I’ll see what I can do.” There is a way you can solve problems, and really add value to your world. But you’re not doing that. When you allow the devil to push you towards a career over a calling, people perish. A question worth meditating over: who is suffering somewhere right now because you turned down your calling and embraced your career instead?
