Christians in the marketplace need to be bold as a lion. At the same time, they need to be gentle as a dove. It takes wisdom to know how to handle different situations. But there is a problem. Many Christians hiding under “marketplace” wisdom have committed sin. They end up becoming the wickedness and evil they are supposed to destroy. A little compromise here. A little compromise there. In the passing of time, they become guilty of all the corruption and sharp practices they condemned when they got started. Wisdom is not an excuse to sin.
In Matthew 10:16, Jesus declared that you will have to operate as a sheep in the midst of wolves. The key to success was to be wise as serpents, but harmless as a dove. It would seem that some Christians have forgotten about the requirement to be harmless as a dove. You do not conquer the wickedness and evil in the business world by doing the same thing they are doing. You overcome evil and destroy it by operating in righteousness, justice and loving-kindness. You win in the marketplace by operating in love, not greed and lust like everyone else.
When a Christian in the marketplace is as greedy and untrustworthy as an unbeliever, what is the point of their salvation? Lust and greed drives the corruption in the world. And unless one is careful, it is easy to fall for the same sin without realising it. The Bible teaches us to guard our heart with all diligence, because everything you do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23). You were meant to destroy the wicked and evil things happening in your world. You are not supposed to become a wolf. Father Abraham was righteous and wealthy. Job hated evil, and he made it. There is no justification for bad behaviour.
