Becoming A Modern-Day Ezra

When people talk about nation-building in the Bible, they often point to Nehemiah. But Ezra is just as important. In Ezra 7:1–10, we see a man who studied the law of the Lord so that he could live it and then teach it to others. Ezra understood that if Israel was going to return home, they would need a “value system” to hold their nation together. He knew that political power and walls alone could not build a people. Only the right values could. So he gave himself fully to becoming a model of the truth he wanted to teach.

Nigeria today has the same need. Many people complain that “we don’t have a value system,” but few stop to ask the real questions: What kind of value system do we need? Who will live it out? Who will teach it? Complaining does not transform nations, but conviction and example do. Just like Ezra, we need men and women who are willing to dig deep, learn the right values, and practice them until they become second nature. This is how a culture is rebuilt; one person at a time, one example at a time.

If you want to see Nigeria change, stop waiting for someone else to fix it. Start by living the values you want to see. Righteousness, mercy, justice, integrity, excellence, generosity, and service are not just ideas; they are daily choices. Then teach others. Start with your children, your colleagues, your community. A nation is not transformed by huge, white elephant projects, but by the character of its people. Nigerians living without a value system can not maintain projects or build anything. So, be an Ezra in your world. Learn it. Live it. Teach it. This is how we build a value system that lasts.
