Broken Systems And The Call To Rebuild

Nehemiah looked at the ruins of Jerusalem and said, “You see the distress we are in… Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace” (Nehemiah 2:17). He didn’t just groan. He built. Nigeria’s democracy is still fragile and flawed. Elections are manipulated, systems are broken, and justice is often sold to the highest bidder. But Nehemiah’s story teaches us that complaint is not enough. It is time to rebuild the wall. And in our case, that wall is our nation’s institutions, culture, and collective integrity.

There is a deep temptation to tune out or disengage. Many Nigerians are tired, and for good reason. They’ve done all they know to do. They’ve voted, hoped, prayed, and marched, but change seems slow. Yet God is still calling Nehemiahs in our time; people who will see what is broken and not walk away. People who will rise in boardrooms, classrooms, churches, and marketplaces to plant seeds of righteousness, mercy, and justice. You may not have political power, but you have something. And you must do your part to build. This democracy won’t fix itself.

So, what wall is broken around you? Is it education? Health? Ethics in business? Media? Leadership? If God has shown you the rot, it means He wants to use you to fix it. Let your holy discontent push you to action. Let your pain become purpose. Nehemiah didn’t wait for everything to be perfect before starting. He began with a burden, a prayer, and a plan. Please understand that you need more than brilliant ideas. You need grace. This June 12, may your heart burn with a fresh call to rebuild. May your work be guided by righteousness and excellence. Nigeria needs more builders.
