The Mission Has a Life of Its Own

A true mission is bigger than the person carrying it. It is not just about you; it has its own life. You are not the mission—you are its custodian, its guardian, its first runner. And if you truly understand this, you will make decisions that are best for the mission, even when they are not convenient for you. Many people fail because they see their mission as an extension of themselves, rather than an assignment from God. But if your mission is from God, it must outlive you. It must continue with or without you.

Jesus understood this. He came to earth with a mission to bring salvation, but when His earthly ministry ended, the mission did not stop. His disciples picked it up, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and spread the gospel to the nations. The mission became bigger than Jesus’ physical presence. This is how you must think about your mission. It must be built in a way that others can carry it forward. If your mission cannot function without you, then you have made it about yourself, not about the assignment God has given you.

If you have a mission, don’t hold onto it so tightly that you stifle its growth. Train others. Teach them. Empower them. Build systems and structures that will allow the mission to continue. The mission must be able to thrive beyond you. Moses passed the baton to Joshua. Elijah passed it to Elisha. Jesus passed it to the disciples. Paul raised Timothy, Titus, and many others. What about you? If your mission depends only on you, then you are standing in its way. Step aside and let the mission grow.
