You Need To Understand The Game Of Business

Many Christians struggle in business because they do not see it for what it truly is; a game with its own rules. Some view business as a necessary evil, believing profit-seeking is greed or that being “too nice” is a virtue in the marketplace. They undercharge, refuse to enforce agreements, and fail to hold clients accountable. But business is not charity; it operates on principles that must be understood. Jesus himself warned in Matthew 10:16, “Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” Wisdom means knowing the rules, understanding how things work, and navigating the system without being naïve.

Imagine trying to play chess without knowing the rules. You would move pieces based on your personal preferences, only to keep losing. That is how many Christians approach business. They want to “do things differently” but fail to first understand how the system works. Proverbs 24:3-4 (TLB) says, “Any enterprise is built by wise planning, becomes strong through common sense, and profits wonderfully by keeping abreast of the facts.” Success comes from wise planning, common sense, and staying informed. Running a business on your own terms, without understanding pricing strategies, negotiation, contracts, and market dynamics, is a recipe for failure.

If you are serious about success, stop making excuses and start learning. The business world is not evil, but it is structured. You are not the first Christian to try their hands at building a business. You need to understand the forces at play and use wisdom to navigate them. Be fair, but firm. Be kind, but not foolish. If a deal goes south, enforce your agreements. If customers take advantage, adjust your policies. There is nothing godly about being careless or unprepared. When you combine faith with wisdom, you will not just survive in business, you will thrive and become a force for good.
