Know the Rules, Play The Game

Many creative and business-minded Christians struggle in the marketplace, not because they lack talent or vision, but because they fail to understand the game they are playing. Some assume that being kind and honest is enough to thrive in business, forgetting that wisdom, strategy, and discernment are equally important. Others underprice their work, believing that generosity alone will sustain them. Some refuse to enforce contracts, thinking it is unspiritual to demand what they are owed. These mistakes are not signs of holiness; they are signs of ignorance. Jesus said we must be “wise as serpents and innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16).

Many Christians mix up the rules of different games, leading to failure in both business and ministry. Running a business but constantly giving away products or services for free is not business—that’s charity. And while generosity is good, a business that doesn’t make a profit won’t survive. On the other hand, running a church with a commercial mindset, treating ministry like a profit-driven venture, corrupts its purpose. Each has its place and purpose. A Christian professional must recognize the difference. You cannot succeed in business if you refuse to operate by business principles. Know the game you’re playing.

The marketplace is not the church. In 1 Corinthians 5:9-10, Paul makes it clear that while we are not to associate with unrepentant believers living in sin, we will inevitably deal with unbelievers in business and society. That means you will trade with liars, negotiate with the greedy, and compete with the ruthless. You must understand this and be wise. Paul also warns in 1 Corinthians 6:1-8 that Christians should not take each other to court, but he never said the same about outsiders. If an unbeliever cheats you, take legal action. Play the game with wisdom and boldness!
