Every mission requires a clear vision of the results you want to achieve, but the path to those results often demands flexibility. In 1 Kings 19:15-18, God gave Elijah a mission with specific outcomes: anoint Hazael as king over Aram, Jehu as king over Israel, and Elisha as his prophetic successor. However, Elijah had to navigate the realities of his mission with wisdom and adaptability. The execution of God’s plan required patience and flexibility as events unfolded. Elijah did not anoint Hazael or Jehu. Turns out Elijah’s role was not to dictate how things would happen but to trust and obey as God worked through various people and circumstances.
Flexibility does not mean abandoning your mission or compromising on the results. It means staying open to different methods and strategies as you progress. Elijah may have expected immediate results, but God reminded him that He was still in control, preserving 7,000 faithful Israelites who had not bowed to Baal. Similarly, when pursuing your mission, understand that delays, changes, or unexpected detours are part of the process. Trust God’s timing and be willing to adjust your plans. Your faithfulness to the mission’s goals is what matters, not clinging rigidly to a single way of accomplishing them.
In your life, you may face moments where your mission feels unclear or the path forward seems blocked. During those times, remember Elijah’s story. Be unwavering in your commitment to the results God has shown you but flexible in your approach. Trust that God is working in ways you cannot see, orchestrating events for His glory. As Proverbs 16:9 says, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Stay focused on the outcome and trust God to guide you, even when the journey looks different from what you expected.
