The diligent watchman, the one whom God has called to watch over their world, must realize that life isn’t just about them. This is a crucial shift in perspective. It’s not simply about “me, me, me” or even “me and my family,” but about taking on a broader sense of responsibility for your community, industry, or nation. Significant change only happens when we put God first, others second, and ourselves last. A true watchman embraces this mindset and seeks to serve God’s purpose for the greater good, not just personal gain.
Nehemiah’s story is a powerful example of what it means to shift from self-interest to a sense of responsibility for others. When Nehemiah heard about the broken walls of Jerusalem, he didn’t think only of himself or his comfort, but he took on the burden of rebuilding the walls for the sake of his people and their future (Nehemiah 1-6). His actions aligned with the principle found in Philippians 2:3-4, where we are called to put the interests of others above our own. Nehemiah understood that his mission was much bigger than himself—it was about his community and God’s purpose.
In Nigeria and across West Africa, there are individuals who have the insight and spiritual awareness to see the needs around them and understand what must be done. Yet, many decide that the work is too difficult or tell themselves it’s not their responsibility to take on the larger issues in society. But we need true visionaries—people willing to rise up and stand for others. It’s time to stop thinking selfishly or being solely driven by personal gain. Embrace your higher calling and recognize that your role is to serve, not just yourself, but the world around you.
