You often hear people say they’re “looking for opportunities,” but what does that really mean? Usually, it’s a polite way of saying they want someone else to figure things out for them. Take Nigeria, for instance: many young people are keen to leave the country for better prospects elsewhere. However, on the global front, the message is clear: Africa is the future. Western Africa, in particular, is seen as one of the biggest economic opportunities in the world right now, probably second only to space exploration. The world is keen on finding ways to invest in Africa.
Yet, despite this huge potential, many Africans are still searching for opportunities elsewhere. It’s easy to see why people want to leave: economic struggles, political instability, and poor infrastructure can make life tough. But what if we changed our mindset instead of just looking for greener pastures? When you look outside your environment for opportunity, it often means you’ve given up on your ability to innovate and transform where you are. While it might seem easier to go for already established opportunities, real progress happens when we develop original ideas, insights, and concepts that can reshape our world, starting right where we are.
Just like in the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), we are called to invest our gifts where God has placed us, not bury them out of fear or convenience. Your “field” might look barren now, but with faith, creativity, and consistent effort, you can turn it into something fruitful. As Christians, we’re meant to be the salt and light of the world, actively working to make it better. Africa needs innovators, builders, and visionaries to work the land and reveal its potential. So, instead of looking for opportunities elsewhere, think about your community. God has placed you here for a reason—don’t miss the chance to fulfill your calling.
