Creating A Meaningful Accountability Relationship

Who are you accountable to? Accountability is crucial for achieving your visions and dreams. Without it, even the best plans can fail. Robert Kiyosaki taught us that any vision without education, mentors, and an action plan, crafted with feedback, is a delusion. Proverbs 15:22 (ESV) says, “‭Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.” This highlights the need to seek guidance and be accountable to those who can help us refine and reach our goals. Reflect on your plans and pursuits, and identify who you are accountable to.

The story of Ruth and Naomi provides a powerful example of mentorship and accountability. After losing her husband, Ruth chose to follow her mother-in-law, Naomi, back to Bethlehem. Ruth submitted completely to Naomi’s mentorship, declaring, “All that you say to me I will do” (Ruth 3:5). Ruth’s willingness to be guided by Naomi led to her blessing and fulfillment. This story teaches us the value of having someone whose authority we defer to, someone we can be accountable to, and who can provide wisdom and direction in our journey.

To pursue our vision effectively, we need someone we can submit to and be accountable to. This person should have integrity, wisdom, and experience. Agree on how often you will report to them and always be honest in your updates. Hebrews 13:17 (NIV) advises, “Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account.” This demonstrates to us that everyone must be held accountable somewhere. Even the person to whom you are accountable must hold themselves accountable elsewhere. Consider who can play this role in your life and take steps to create a meaningful accountability relationship.
