Conscience And Commerce

Sooner or later, many Christians in business face a difficult question: should you sell your product or service to someone whose values do not align with yours? This tension appears in everyday work. A designer, a shop owner, or a consultant may receive a request that does not sit well with their conscience. Scripture reminds believers to guard their convictions. The apostle Paul wrote, “Whatever does not proceed from faith is sin” (Romans 14:23). Yet Christians also live and work among people with different beliefs. Jesus served people from every background. The challenge is learning how to serve society faithfully without violating the principles that guide your life.

Consider a simple example. A custom shirt maker may be asked to help make a shirt that promotes messages and lifestyles they don’t support. Maybe a shirt in support of same-sex relationships. Something that is legal, but at odds with their Christian faith. Situations like these force people to ask hard questions. Am I simply serving a customer, or am I participating in something I believe is wrong? Even outside faith, professionals sometimes decline projects for ethical reasons. The Christian response must combine clarity and humility. You must hold firm to conscience while still treating every person with respect and dignity.

For this reason, Christian professionals must be clear about the values guiding their work long before difficult moments appear. When your principles are defined, decisions become easier when pressure comes. The goal is not to withdraw from society but to engage it faithfully. Scripture encourages believers to think on “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure” (Philippians 4:8). Let those standards shape your choices. Serve people well. Speak with kindness. But guard your conscience carefully. In the end, the aim of Christian work is simple: provide excellent service, maintain integrity, and honour God through the decisions you make every day.
