Starting In The Spirit, Ending In The Flesh

Paul’s question in Galatians 3:3 is sharp and uncomfortable: “Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?” It exposes a common pattern. Many people receive their calling, purpose, or mission through prayer, fasting, and deep encounters with God. The beginning is spiritual. Direction is clear. Faith is strong. But somewhere along the way, reliance shifts. What started with dependence on God slowly becomes driven by sense alone, brain work alone, strategy alone, effort alone, confidence in systems, connections, or personal strength. The Spirit is invited at the start, then sidelined during execution.

This drift often happens subtly. Think of a young man that prayed until a clear vision of who to marry is received. But after the wedding, he fails to continue building the home with God. Things fall apart and he begins to wonder what happened? This is the tale of everyone who ever started anything with God, and stopped doing the things that built their relationship with heaven. For many, they start drifting when results begin to show, responsibilities increase, and pressure mounts. Instead of deepening fellowship, people compensate with activity. Prayer becomes shorter. Waiting on God feels inefficient. Decisions are made faster, with less consultation.

Please note that perfection by the flesh does not always mean sin. It often means self-reliance. Trusting methods more than God. Trusting experience more than grace. This is where many missions begin to stall. They look busy but feel dry. They are productive but lack power. What once felt alive now feels heavy, because spiritual work cannot be sustained by natural strength. The warning in Galatians is not just theological; it is practical. You cannot finish God’s work without God. You cannot build that home, career, ministry or business without God. If Jesus originated the idea behind your marriage or career, only Jesus can perfect it if you keep following.
