It is helpful to think about your business as something you build. This is a building project. You might not consider a petty trading operation in this way. Those side hustles do not count. However, when you look beyond business for survival and start to think about business as value creation, you will understand this. A solid business that will stand the test of time. A business that will work as a worthy vehicle for you to advance the purpose of God in your world, is something you build. Thinking about your business this way helps you to develop a proper strategy.
For example, when you understand that a business is something you build, you will see the truth revealed in Proverbs 24:27. The verse says, “Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house.” This advises prioritizing your income-generating activities before trying to build a home. By focusing on developing your “field” (your career or business), you build a stable financial foundation first. Russell Brunson said it best, “The life you want, the marriage you want, the family you want are all going to be fueled by the business you build.”
As you work towards building a business, you must master the art of planning. And you have to “count the cost.” The Americans like to remind us all that one can not make an omelette without breaking a couple of eggs. Many great entrepreneurs, have spent decades building their businesses at great cost to their personal lives. Luke 14:28-30 admonishes us to count the cost before embarking on major construction projects. If you intend to build a tower, you have to sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether you have enough to complete it. Replace “tower”, with “million-dollar company”. Do you have what it takes?
