Don’t just pray for yourself. Make a list of people to pray for. Only asking God for your needs shows spiritual immaturity. Life is not about you, your needs, your wants and your desires. The universe does not revolve around you. A real Christian grows to understand that it is God first, others second and think of yourself last. You might feel that with so many things going on right now. And so many unresolved issues you’re trusting God for. How will you now take on even more prayer burden?
You start by understanding that intercession is a duty. You pray for others and bear their burdens in prayer with a sense of duty. In 1 Samuel 12:23, we learn that Samuel declares it would be a sin to cease praying for his people. This act of prayerlessness is viewed as sinful because it obstructs God’s purposes, weakens the community’s relationship with God, and demonstrates a lack of love and spiritual leadership. As you love people, and take responsibility to provide leadership for them, you have to pray for them too. This is an important part of your duties.
You can never finish praying for yourself, and then have the chance to pray for others. That never happens. Problems no dey ever finish. There will always be an urgent matter to pray about. A fire you need to attend to in your personal life. You should pray for yourself, no arguments there. But you should also have room for others in your prayer time. Start at home. What is the best prayer you can pray for your parents, siblings or relatives? And as a mission-minded person, are you praying for the people your mission is meant to deliver and empower? Love people enough to pray for them.
