The Agenda You Push

Every business carries an agenda, whether the owner knows it or not. For David Green, founder of Hobby Lobby, the agenda was clear. To keep Christ at the center of culture. Back in 1995, he noticed that Christmas ads, including his own, were filled with everything except the true meaning of the season. No gospel. No mention of Jesus. No reminder of why the holiday even existed. He decided he couldn’t just run a business; he had to run a mission. That decision birthed something powerful that continues to shape the business world today.

In 1996, Hobby Lobby launched its first Christ-centered Christmas ad. Instead of only pushing products, the ad carried a message of salvation, urging readers to discover the Savior. Over time, the company expanded this practice to Easter and Independence Day, boldly declaring that the foundation of freedom is faith in God. Think about that. While many businesses avoid matters of religion altogether, Hobby Lobby chose to go against the tide and tie its brand to the gospel. David Green understood that silence is also an agenda, one that hands the culture over to godless voices.

What about you? As a professional or business owner, what agenda are you pushing? Are you silent about your values because of pressure? Or are you, like David Green, finding ways to let your faith influence your work? Colossians 3:23 reminds us: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” Your business can be more than profit. It can be a platform. Just as Hobby Lobby uses ads to declare Jesus, you can use your gifts, your voice, and your mission to keep God’s light alive in your world.
