How Am I Loving The One That Has Loved Me?

Healthy relationships are built on love, not transactions. Love is not meant to be quid pro quo, where every act of kindness demands an equal return. Yet love is also not an excuse for irresponsibility. Every meaningful relationship carries responsibilities that help it flourish. Consider the relationship between parents and children. For many years, parents pour themselves into raising, protecting, teaching, and providing for their children. As those children become adults, Scripture calls them to honour their parents in return (Ephesians 6:2). Mature love eventually asks, “How can I also serve the one who has served me?” That is how relationships remain healthy.

The same principle applies to teachers and students. A good teacher gladly shares knowledge, experience, and wisdom, but learning requires more than simply showing up. Good students pay attention, ask thoughtful questions, complete their assignments, and practise what they have been taught. They honour the investment their teachers make by taking responsibility for their own growth. Proverbs 1:5 says, “A wise man will hear, and will increase learning.” Relationships thrive when both sides embrace their responsibilities. It is unfair to expect continual investment from others while refusing to make the effort that genuine growth requires from you.

Your relationship with God follows the same pattern. You can never repay His grace, nor can you earn His love. Salvation is God’s gift through Christ. Yet grace should produce wholehearted obedience, not passive entitlement. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Love naturally expresses itself through faithful action. We pray, serve, give, forgive, and obey not because God needs our help, but because our love for Him changes how we live. Every healthy relationship asks something of us. The question is not whether there are responsibilities. The question is whether we will embrace them joyfully.
