Every business is pushing an agenda, whether the owner realizes it or not. Sometimes it is obvious, sometimes it is hidden, but the world of business is never neutral. Just look at the battle between petroleum giants and renewable energy. Of course the oil companies will fight against solar and wind. It’s not personal, it’s about their billions. Every agenda that threatens their profits will be opposed. The lesson here is simple: agendas collide. That means if you are running a business, you must be clear on what agenda fuels your business, and also what agendas oppose it.
If you are blind to the agendas that oppose your mission, your business will suffer. You may wake up one day and realize the ground has shifted, your market is gone, or your influence has been swallowed. That’s why wisdom says, “Follow the money.” Study the forces around you. Ask: who benefits if my business fails? Who gets stronger if I lose? This isn’t about paranoia. It’s about awareness. Without intelligence, even a good and godly business can be crushed simply because it was outworked by competing agendas. Jesus came to give us life, while exposing the thief’s agenda of killing, stealing, and destruction.
The Bible gives us wisdom here. Nehemiah was building Jerusalem’s wall, but he wasn’t naïve. He knew Sanballat and Tobiah had their own agenda, and he refused to be distracted. He built with one hand and carried a sword with the other (Nehemiah 4:17). That’s how you run a mission-driven business: prayerful and practical, watchful and wise. So, ask yourself today: what agenda fuels your business? What agenda opposes it? God has called you to build, but He has also called you to watch. May you step into a higher level of mission and agenda consciousness in Jesus’s name.
