Your Business Is a Duty Post

Many Christians are waiting for a “thunder from heaven” ministry assignment while overlooking the business already in their hands. In Exodus 31:1-5, God filled Bezalel with His Spirit, giving him wisdom, skill, craftsmanship, and artistic ability to build the Tabernacle. Bezalel was not a priest. He was a craftsman. His workshop was his duty post. In the same way, your office, factory, farm, store, or company can become a place where God’s purposes are expressed. The question is not whether your work feels religious. The question is whether you are faithfully showing up.

David Green, billionaire founder of Hobby Lobby, appears to understand this principle. He did not plant a church. He built a business. Yet he treats that business as something entrusted to him by God. Through it, he creates jobs, serves customers, supports Christian causes, and funds Bible translation projects. He is not merely selling products. He is stewarding an assignment. A business owner should not wake up asking, “How much money can I make today?” A better question is, “How can I faithfully serve people from this duty post God has given me?”

If your business is your duty post, then excellence becomes worship. Customer service becomes ministry. Paying salaries on time becomes an act of love. Solving problems becomes obedience to God. Stop waiting for another assignment while neglecting the one already in your hands. God may never ask you to preach from a pulpit. He may simply ask you to run an excellent company that reflects His wisdom, goodness, and generosity. Your business is not a distraction from your calling. It may very well be the calling itself. Take some time to think about these things.
