How To Start Doing The Works Of God

John 6:28-29 says, “Then they asked him, ‘What must we do to do the works God requires?’ Jesus answered, ‘The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.’” When you sense a mission but cannot fully explain it, don’t freeze. Start where you are. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel or build something brand new. Sometimes, the smartest thing you can do is to find a mission-minded person or organization near you and serve there. Life is in stages. Today you follow. Tomorrow, you lead. That is how God trains His people.

If you study Scripture, you will see this same pattern. David served Saul before he became king. Samuel served Eli before he became a prophet. Elisha poured water on Elijah’s hands before he carried a double portion of his spirit. Even the apostles served Jesus before they were sent out. Service is not a step backward. It is how God prepares you for what is next. In the place of service, your character is shaped, your discipline is tested, and your mission becomes clearer. You don’t need a platform yet. You need a place to serve and grow.

In today’s world, many skip this process. They sense a call from God and immediately want to be in charge. They rush off to prayer mountains, wanting to “hear an audible voice of God.” Then they panic and feel lost when nothing is forthcoming. If you feel the stirring of a mission but lack clarity, start by serving faithfully. Find a mission-aligned leader or community and commit yourself. God uses service to make His soldiers. Before you build your own work, be faithful in another man’s work. In due time, your season of leadership will come. But first, let the service do its deep work in you.
