The relationships in your life create an atmosphere. And it is the atmosphere around you that determines what is possible in your life. If you want to know why some people rise while others remain stuck, look at the company they keep. We learn this from Psalms 1. It then follows that the fastest way to change your life for better or worse is to change who you are friends with. Wrong people can suffocate your future. The right people can breathe life into your dreams. Your circle is either building your faith or draining it. Pay attention to it.
But here’s the truth: the relationships in your life are tied to your standards. Birds of the same feather flock together. When you have no standards, anything goes. You’ll find yourself surrounded by mediocrity because you tolerate it. Mediocre people thrive where there are no boundaries. But when you raise your standards, you create a filter. People who don’t share your values will drift away, and the ones who remain will push you higher. When you raise your standards, you will be branded proud. The other half will accuse you of backsliding. But that’s fine. Understand that lower standards means anything goes. Higher standards mean you attract high quality people.
So whenever in doubt, raise your standards. Raise your standards for who can be your mentor, romantic partner, or friend. Raise your standards for where you live. Not every town or city is worthy of your talents and expertise. Some towns are not worthy of being your base. Raise your standards for who you work with. Think about what’s acceptable in your own life. Raising your standards will not solve every problem, but it will change your atmosphere. And once your atmosphere changes, your future opens up. Don’t pray for a new life while holding on to old standards.
