You cannot accomplish great things by treating your mission as a side hustle. Many people give up on their calling because they can’t monetize it immediately or don’t see a clear path to profit. This is a grave mistake. Your mission deserves your full attention and best effort, not the leftovers of your time and energy. As you faithfully commit to your calling, things will align, and opportunities will emerge. But this only happens when you prioritize it. Don’t settle for mediocrity by treating your calling like an afterthought. Dedicate yourself wholeheartedly, and let God work out the rest.
“Take a simple idea and take it seriously,” says Charlie Munger. If your calling or mission seems modest right now, don’t dismiss it. Instead, pour your energy and focus into what is in front of you. Ecclesiastes 9:10 encourages us, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” This principle applies even if you’re struggling to see immediate results. The work you put in today lays the foundation for tomorrow’s success. You must bring your best work, and maximize the opportunities available for your talents and mission. Every great achievement begins with consistent, focused effort on small but meaningful steps.
It’s perfectly fine to have side hustles to support yourself while working on your calling or big mission. Even the Apostle Paul supported his ministry by making tents (Acts 18:3), demonstrating that practical needs and divine purposes can coexist. However, whether it’s your mission or your side hustle, each deserves your best effort. Half-hearted attempts lead to frustration and poor results. Colossians 3:23 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” Balance your priorities wisely, ensuring that your commitment to excellence is evident in all you do.
