Over the past few years, Nigerians have captured national attention through their Guinness World Record attempts. One, a chef, drew enormous support as she pursued records related to cooking. Brands rallied behind her. Millions followed the story online. Food companies, media organisations, and ordinary Nigerians instinctively understood the value of what she was doing because it aligned with habits and interests already deeply rooted in the culture. Another young Nigerian, attempting a record in entrepreneurship education, teaching continuously for days, failed. His journey exposes a difficult truth: a vision, however noble, is only as strong as the systems that support it.
The difference was not necessarily passion, sacrifice, or even faith. Both projects demanded courage, endurance, and months of preparation. The deeper issue was that one mission was carried by existing structures while the other challenged them. Nigeria possesses strong cultural and commercial systems around food, entertainment, and sport, but the same cannot always be said of entrepreneurship, education or intellectual development. Jesus taught that anyone wishing to build a tower must first sit down and count the cost (Luke 14:28). You must understand not only what you want to create but also the environment into which you are building.
This principle appears throughout Scripture. Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams, but he also understood the need to shave his head before appearing in the Palace. Daniel received divine revelation, yet mastered the language and institutions of Babylon. Wisdom is not merely knowing what God has called you to do; it is understanding the world in which you must do it. Some callings allow you to ride existing currents. Others require you to create new ones. When God gives you a vision that challenges the culture itself, expect the journey to be slower, harder, and more costly.
