The 2026 FIFA World Cup has reminded us once again that football is rarely decided on paper. This week, smaller nations frustrated and defeated teams many people assumed would cruise into the next round. Before the matches began, analysts had already predicted the winners. They had bigger names, richer leagues, and more history. Yet ninety minutes later, some of those favourites were walking away disappointed. The Apostle Paul wrote, “God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty” (1 Corinthians 1:27). Never allow public opinion to become your private limitation.
The Bible is full of underdogs. David faced Goliath with a sling. Gideon defeated an army with only three hundred men. The disciples were ordinary people, yet they turned the world upside down. God often begins with people who appear too small, too inexperienced, too young, or too poorly connected for the assignment before them. The world values pedigree, credentials, and influence. God looks for obedience, courage, and faithfulness. Your mission does not become impossible because someone else has more money, more followers, or more experience than you. There is a grace at work in your life.
So stop comparing yourself to larger ministries, bigger companies, or more established organisations. Stop waiting until you feel qualified enough to begin. Your responsibility is not to control the scoreboard. Your responsibility is to play your game faithfully. Work with the grace God has made available to you. Prepare well. Pray without ceasing. Improve your skills. Serve people wholeheartedly. Leave the results to God. The same God who delights in using shepherd boys, fishermen, and prisoners still works today. Do not disqualify yourself before the match even begins. The world may see an underdog, but God sees a future champion.
