On Celebrity Worship and Discernment

Nigerians have a culture of celebrity worship. They worship politicians, actors, musicians, and pastors. This is something you have to be careful about. You must be careful about what you applaud, amplify, and turn into examples. Scripture never promotes blind followership. The Bible says, “Follow me as I follow Christ,” and “Children, obey your parents in the Lord.” Both statements put a boundary on imitation. You don’t follow people because they are popular, loud, or successful. You follow them to the extent that their lives reflect the image of God. Once that alignment breaks, imitation should stop.

The problem with following influencers, celebrities and idolising people without discernment is that they will make you lose your values. Influence without discernment is how values quietly decay. Celebrity culture today ignores that boundary. For example, many celebrities openly send the message that marriage is unnecessary, commitment is optional, and responsibility is outdated. They refuse to marry, yet have baby mamas everywhere. They are free to live however they choose. But society is not obligated to celebrate them. When a society celebrates people who undermine its core institutions like faith, family, marriage, it should not be shocked when those institutions weaken.

What a society rewards, it reproduces. What it glamorizes, it multiplies. Celebration is not neutral; it is instructional. Wisdom demands restraint. You should not pattern your life after any celebrity who does not share your values, no matter how talented or famous they are. The biblical standard is clear: follow the “Jesus” in people’s lives, not their fame. That means you imitate only what reflects what is good, true, and beautiful. Anything else may entertain, but it is not worthy of devotion. A society that confuses visibility with virtue will keep producing noise, but very little substance.
