When Prayer Opens the Door for Practical Help

A woman’s business was struggling. Her profits were too low to cover her costs, and unpaid bills kept piling up. She shared her struggles with a sister in church, Mary, who was part of the church counselling team. Mary didn’t know much about business, but she cared deeply. So, she prayed with her. Week after week, she shared Bible verses, gave small gifts to help with expenses, and kept checking in. Months passed. The business didn’t improve, but the woman felt supported. Mary stood with her, not with strategy or advice, but with love and prayer.

Later, at an alumni meeting, the same woman spoke to an old schoolmate named Deborah, who happened to run a business. Deborah asked a few questions, then quickly saw the problem: the woman’s pricing model was wrong. With a few suggestions, she showed her how to adjust things. Two months after that conversation, the business began to recover. That experience raised a tough but fair question: why didn’t Mary ever bring this up? The answer is simple. Mary did not have the business knowledge. But she gave what she had. And God used it to keep this woman standing until help could come from another source.

We need to learn how God works. He often sends support in pieces. One person gives comfort. Another brings wisdom. One prays. Another teaches. This is not a weakness. It’s how the body of Christ is designed. If your pastor prays and someone else gives you a business tip the next day, both are answers from God. But only few are able to connect both events. Don’t despise the Marys. And if you’re like Deborah, don’t forget to pray too. “The body is not made up of one part but of many” (1 Corinthians 12:14).
