The Roman Catholic Church announced its new leader, Pope Leo XIV. He becomes the 267th pope in a Christian movement that traces its roots back to Jesus Christ and the apostles. Whether or not you are Catholic, this is a moment to pause and reflect. This is a church that has lasted over 2,000 years. Can you imagine that? For over twenty centuries, through trials, wars, scandals, and revolutions, a mission has endured. The church is still here. This should make every believer ask: what kind of mission are you part of? And how far could it possibly go?
Sometimes when we serve God, we only think about the present. This week, this month, this year. But it is powerful to pause and imagine the future. What could your life’s work look like in 50 years? What could your business or workplace look like in 200 years? Even if you don’t feel like you’re building anything great now, remember: everything big started small. God’s vision often stretches beyond our lifetime. That’s why we must live and build with long-term faith. The people who laid the foundation for the church 2,000 years ago probably never imagined what it would become.
You may not be able to see the full future of your mission. Your brain couldn’t possibly imagine 200 years into the future. But you can trust the One who holds time in His hands. Reflect on your place of work, when did the mission of that organisation start? How far could it go? The Chinese used to say, “May the Song Dynasty endure for ten thousand years.” It is time to start thinking and confessing that about your mission too. That’s not exaggeration. That’s vision. Have faith, and your mission will blossom, thrive and endure for years, decades, and centuries to come.
