The Tough Love of Leadership

You might not realize it yet, but you are a leader. Leadership is not about fancy titles; it’s about responsibility. As a leader, you have a duty to mentor and guide others on their journey, just as others have helped you on yours. This is where the challenge begins. Discipleship and mentoring are tough tasks that require patience, persistence, and love. As the saying goes, “By the time a man realizes his father was right, he already has a son who thinks he’s wrong.” Leadership demands grace, as it often involves pouring into others who might not yet understand or appreciate your efforts.

Even Moses, one of the greatest leaders in the Bible, was frustrated by his assignment. In Numbers 11:11–15, he asked God why he was burdened with the care of the Israelites, questioning if he had given birth to them. His honesty reveals the weight of discipleship. Caring for others, leading them, and mentoring them can feel overwhelming, especially when they resist or misunderstand your intentions. But like Moses, we must remember that this calling is not about our strength but God’s. He equips us to lead and provides grace for the moments of frustration.

So, where do we draw the line in discipleship and mentoring? The answer lies in love. When you genuinely love the people God has placed in your life, love will lead you. Christ’s love for us is the ultimate example of sacrificial care. Let love guide your decisions, even in tough moments. There will be times when separation or a pause in mentorship is necessary, but such actions should always be prayerful and thoughtful. As you lead with love, trust God to provide wisdom and strength for every step of the journey.
