Valued Relationships Comes With Demands

Every meaningful relationship will place certain demands on you. This is part of what it means to truly care for and invest in others. Whether it’s with parents, siblings, a spouse, children, friends, mentors, or colleagues, relationships are a mix of highs and lows—the good, the bad, and sometimes even the ugly. You can’t just pick and choose the moments you prefer. Real relationships ask for your time, effort, patience, and understanding, even when things aren’t easy. Embracing these demands make us realize that true relationships require commitment, not convenience.

Abraham’s relationship with God shows that true connection often involves sacrifice. He was called to leave his homeland, to journey into the unknown, and even faced the ultimate test when God asked him to offer up his only son. His journey wasn’t one of ease or convenience, yet he remained faithful. Today, many believers desire only the blessings and comfort of a relationship with God but resist anything that asks for sacrifice or commitment. However, Abraham’s example reminds us that a genuine relationship, especially with God, goes beyond convenience—it will make demands of you.

If you truly value a relationship, respect the demands it brings and honor it wholeheartedly. Don’t just focus on what you’re receiving; take time to consider what the other person needs, too. Right now, for instance, your parents may want you to call, but you feel too busy. One day, they won’t be here, and you might wish for just one more call. These demands aren’t forever, and in the grand scheme of things, they aren’t unreasonable. Relationships are temporary gifts; honor their needs while you can, so you’ll look back without regret.
