Whether you’re running a nonprofit, your own business, or working for someone else, what you do is not as important as why you’re doing it. The crucial thing is to daily examine your heart to determine whether your daily work is a labor of love or not. In our pursuit of success and fulfillment, it’s easy to be swayed by greed or lust for power, money, or recognition. However, as a watchman tasked with a mission, you must ensure that love remains at the core of your motivations. This love should be rooted in your desire to serve others and glorify God, not to satisfy your selfish desires.
Contrary to the capitalist mentality that “greed is good,” the Bible teaches that greed is not good. If everyone operated by greed, the world would be in a far worse place. Greed creates room for evil to perpetuate, leading to exploitation, corruption, and injustice. In 1 Timothy 6:10, we are warned that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Greed blinds us to the needs of others and drives us to pursue personal gain at the expense of righteousness and compassion. Our actions, driven by greed, can have detrimental effects on society and our spiritual well-being.
Love is beautiful, and a world shaped by love empowers everyone in it. In a world filled with love, people can do their best work that glorifies God. They get to live their best life possible, and everyone wins. Greed is to exalt yourself above others, and God frowns upon this. Do not become a worker of iniquity by doing the Lord’s work but not with a perfect heart. Let love guide your mission, ensuring that your efforts are aligned with God’s will and contribute to a better, more compassionate world.
