There is a good chance that one of the first things you do every morning is pick up your smartphone. You check messages, open apps, and prepare for the day ahead. Your phone is real to you. Your car is real to you. You reasonably expect your car to start when you turn the key. In the same way, your spiritual gifts must become real to you. Not abstract. Not distant. Real. Practical. Usable. God did not give you spiritual gifts for decoration. Your spiritual gifts should become part of your daily life.
Throughout the bible, and even in everyday life, we see people using spiritual gifts in practical ways. Joseph used wisdom and interpretation to prepare Egypt for famine. Daniel used spiritual insight to solve problems. Bezalel was filled with the Spirit to design and build skillfully. Even today, many people use spiritual gifts in business, leadership, teaching, counselling, creativity, and problem-solving. Some people carry unusual wisdom. Others bring prophetic insight. Some bring the warmth and comfort of heaven. These things are real. Spiritual gifts are not only for church services. They are tools God gives people to make a difference in the real world.
Your spiritual gift is a tool. It is much more powerful than any of the physical tools you depend on. Your gift is mightier than any sword or weapon in the physical. You need to check and identify your gifts. And begin to use them every day. Gifts grow stronger through use. Just like muscles grow with training, spiritual gifts also develop with practice, obedience, and experience. Apostle Paul reminded Timothy to fan his gift into flames. A good reminder for every believer today. You won’t become the salt and light of your world by hard work alone, your spiritual gifts have a role to play.
