Every believer carries a sense of mission, yet that mission is never isolated. Scripture teaches that we are part of something far larger than our individual ambitions. In 1 Corinthians 12:27, Paul describes believers as members of the body of Christ, each with a distinct role and function. Just as the eye, hand, and foot serve different purposes within one body, every calling contributes to a larger work God is accomplishing in the world. Understanding this truth brings clarity and humility. Your purpose matters, but it is also connected to a greater story unfolding through many people, many gifts, and many faithful acts of obedience.
Consider something as complex as an airplane or spacecraft. No single person designs, manufactures, and assembles every component. Thousands of engineers, technicians, and suppliers contribute different parts: engines, navigation systems, electronics, structural materials, and software. Each group focuses on its own specialized task, yet all their efforts converge into one functioning machine. The same pattern appears in scientific progress. Breakthroughs in fields like artificial intelligence (AI) did not emerge from one isolated genius but from thousands of researchers working across universities, laboratories, and companies. Their independent efforts gradually combine into collective progress, demonstrating how large achievements often emerge from many smaller, coordinated contributions.
In the same way, think carefully about where your true strengths lie within God’s larger work. You are not the Alpha and the Omega; the story did not begin with you, and it will not end with you. Like Isaac Newton famously acknowledged, we often see farther because we stand on the shoulders of giants who came before us. Recognize the foundations already laid and the people already working in your field. Look for individuals and organizations pursuing similar purposes. Ask how you can collaborate, where your gifts fit best, and what important gaps your skills and efforts can help fill.
